Hamstring Takes Down Rising Watson

Hamstring Injury Slows Rising Star Watson

Watson is expected to miss four weeks

GREENVILLE, South Carolina – A hamstring injury has sidelined rising star quarterback Malik Watson for four weeks, a significant blow to the South Carolina football team.

Watson, a sophomore, has been one of the most dynamic players in the country this season, leading the Gamecocks to a 5-2 record and a No. 20 ranking. He has thrown for 1,800 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, while also rushing for 450 yards and five touchdowns.

The injury occurred during the Gamecocks' 31-24 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday. Watson was tackled on the sidelines after a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter. He immediately grabbed his left hamstring and was helped off the field.

An MRI on Sunday confirmed the diagnosis as a Grade 2 hamstring strain. Watson is expected to miss four weeks, which means he will be out for the Gamecocks' remaining two regular-season games and the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

"This is obviously a big loss for our team," said South Carolina coach Shane Beamer. "Malik has been playing at a high level all season, and he will be difficult to replace. But we are confident that we have the depth to overcome this injury and continue to be successful."

The Gamecocks will turn to redshirt freshman quarterback Colten Gauthier in Watson's absence. Gauthier has appeared in four games this season, completing 4-of-5 passes for 37 yards.

"Colten is a talented young quarterback," Beamer said. "He has been preparing all season for this opportunity, and I am confident that he will step up and lead our team."

The loss of Watson is a major setback for the Gamecocks, but they still have a chance to make a run in the postseason. They currently control their own destiny in the Atlantic Coast Conference and could potentially win the ACC Championship and earn a spot in the College Football Playoff.

"We are not going to let this injury define our season," Beamer said. "We are still a very good football team, and we have our sights set on winning a championship."
